Course Details:
In this class we will explore the familiar yet often underappreciated tefillos of bentching (Birkas Hamazon) and Aleinu, delving into their text, halachos, and deeper meaning. Through an in-depth study of their structure, sources, and theological underpinnings, we will seek to uncover how these daily prayers reflect core Torah values and spiritual truths.
The course will focus not only on what we say and how we say it, but also why we say it—examining how each word and phrase is rooted in halachic principles and hashkafic insight. Special attention will be given to themes of gratitude, submission, and purpose in avodas Hashem, as reflected in these tefillos.
Our goal is to transform these routine recitations into moments of intentional avodah, helping students gain a greater appreciation and connection to their davening. Along the way, we’ll discuss how these tefillos have evolved, their sources in Chazal and Tanach, and their role in Jewish history and daily life.
Ultimately, this class aims to bring greater kavana and clarity to some of the most often-recited tefillos, giving students the tools to say them with heart, mind, and meaning.
